Short-Term Certification Course – Audio Engineering

Audio engineering is the process of applying electronic, digital, acoustic, and electrical principles to recording and production of music, voices, and sounds.

The role of Audio engineers generally includes capturing, mixing, or reproducing sound using electronic audio equipment. This field has a wide scope as it can be applied to music, television, film, and other media channels.  Audio engineers can specialize in various streams of media productions, like music, film, TV, or radio broadcasting. One may need to gain proficiency with specific types of equipment and software to become an audio engineer.

Popular audio engineering techniques

1. Mastering
2. Ducking
3. EQ Matching
4. Mix Bus Compression
5. Sidechaining
6. Compression
7. Reverb

Audio engineers may work in different settings and with various types of artists or clients. Majorly known to have work in music recording studios, audio engineers can also explore other areas such as:

  • Broadcasting (audio production)
  • Film production (sound effects and tracks)
  • Movie theaters (sound designers)
  • Colleges and universities (teaching audio engineering
  • Live theater (audio playback and live sound management)

Duties of an Audio Engineer include the following -

Recording:

For creating a piece of music or audio, recording sound or capturing audio data is the first step.

Editing:

For editing & manipulating recorded sounds/audios, a computer software should be used. Engineers then need to combine these sounds with multiple effects like reverb, delay, or distortion etc whichever suits as per the intended purpose, such as movie soundtracks or commercial jingles.

Mixing:

Audio engineers can use mixing techniques like equalization (EQ) and compression to alter the timbre of an instrument, voice, or track. Also, dynamics processing, such as gating or limiting can be used, to control volume levels of an audio track.

Mastering:

Mastering is a process used to check whether tracks can be compatible in various media formats for commercial distribution. It also includes various other technical aspects, such as creating tracks that sound good on various playback systems like car audio systems, home stereos, laptops, and portable devices.

But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences
