DGMC Panel Discussion on Gender Stereotypes in Film Report

DGMC in collaboration with US Consulate General, Mumbai and Dosti House had organized A Panel Discussion on Gender Stereotypes in Film on 18th August 2017 from 12.30 PM to 02.00 PM at Durgadevi Saraf Hall, RSET Campus, Malad (W), Mumbai.

Aim of the discussion was to create awareness about gender stereotypes, motivate students to do research on the topic discussed and bring a positive change in the society as a future media professional.

The program was attended by students from DGMCMS, as well as other colleges. More than two hundred students from colleges across Mumbai participated in the event.

The Panel Discussion started with the formal welcome of Mr James B. Fennell, Cultural Affairs Oficer, US Consulate General in Mumbai, along with the panelists Mr Ashish Kaul, CEO of Prakash Jha Productions, Ms Audrey D’mello, Programme Director, Majlis Legal Centre, Ms Devika Parasher, head of Women’s Initiatives and Partnerships at Startup Leadership and the keynote speaker Ms Subarna Ghosh.
After the welcome address by Dr. N. M. Kondap, Director General, RSET Higher Education, the panel discussion commenced with a short screening of videos. These videos exhibited the issue of women empowerment in foreign films as compared to the cliched depiction of women as sexual object in Indian films.

The screening was followed by a speech-cum-discussion by Mr James Farrell, who spoke on gender and racial discrimination in Hollywood films. He punctuated his speech with statistics about the leading roles in Hollywood films that underscored the racial prejudices present there.

“Men are given leadership role, whereas women are defined by relationship with their men”, he said, as an example.

His speech was followed by Ms Devika Parasher, who shared her observations regarding the ideas of nationalism as shown in Bollywood cinema and the portrayal of women in this context. She also noted how eve-teasing in today’s society is largely a result of the influence of Bollywood cinema and its depictions of toxic masculinity by the lead male characters.

Mr Ashish Kaul, CEO of Prakash Jha Productions, explained the consumption patterns of media content by Indian audiences and the types of movies he has produced, with special reference to his critically acclaimed film, “Lipstick Under My Burkha”.

Ms Audrey D’Mello, Programme Director of Majlis Legal Centre, an NGO offering legal assistance regarding Women’s Rights spoke next on the issues pertaining to Domestic Violence and Rape. She pointed out that molestation and rape is often perpetrated by a person known to the victim.

Her speech was followed by the Question and Answer session and the programmed ended with the vote of thanks by Prof. Arati Kamath and the distribution of certificates to all the participants.

But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences
