Name of Event: Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2020 Hosted by: Devi Prasad Goenka Management College of Media Studies, Malad (WEST) Date: 29th January 2020 – 1st February 2020
DGMC was selected as the Venue, Screening & Outreach Partner to the 16th Mumbai International Film Festival 2020 for DOCUMENTARY | SHORT FICTION | ANIMATION. The Event was hosted from 29th January to 1st February 2020 at the Madhoprasad Saraf Seminar Hall.
Dignitaries such Aruna Raje Patil, Filmmaker and Producer was the, Chief Guest, Sunder Chand Rajput, Editor, Navbharat Times and Neelaabh Kaul, filmmaker were the Guests of Honour at this prestigious event, which was one of its kind held for the first time in the suburbs. Aspiring filmmakers, cinematographers, journalists, directors, sound engineers and animators attended the event. Around 100 students attended day 1 screening.
The screenings were held over three consecutive days. The Films screened were mainly documentaries and animated movies. A few short fiction films were also screened such as ‘Naina’, ‘Solo Finale’ and ‘My Turn’. With such films being screened the viewers’ experienced diverse emotions
MIFF assured fun and entertainment for the viewers and were a source of inspiration for aspiring animators.
Festival Summary
Day 1
The event started by lighting of the lamp and Saraswati Vandana, sung by DGMC student Samidha Basrur, simultaneously. The dignitaries who lighted the lamp were, Aruna Raje Patil, Filmmaker, Chief Guest, Sunder Chand Rajput, Editor, Navbharat Times, Guest of Honour, Neelaabh Kaul, filmmaker, principal of DGMC Amee Vora and Dean Mukesh Sharma. The event was assisted by Bhagwandas Banshkar, representative from the Films Division and it was conducted under the supervision of Professor Amit Singh. While speaking to the audience present in the inauguration ceremony Mrs. Patil said “It is a great initiative that college (DGMC) has taken to tie up with MIFF for screening films”. Sunder Chand Rajput in appreciation of the step taken by DGMC and its Principal and Dean said “ Aapke Dean sir aur principal ma’am kaafi smart hai jo unhone yeh kabiliyat dikhayi hai, itna bada event organise karne ki” Some of the films screened were True Love Story, Edpa Kana, Vertical City, Vitha, The Climb, Pacifier, Die Hard, Vishaparavam, Munni, Mumbai Hustle, Mariza, The Membas of Arunachal Pradesh, Fauve, Tree of Unity, The Moustache, Locked, We can’t live without cosmos from directors all over the globe. Aspiring filmmakers, cinematographers, journalists, directors, sound engineers and animators attended event. Around 100 students attended day 1 screening.
Day 2
The Screenings held on Day two of the Mumbai International Film Festival with the college outreach partner Deviprasad Goenka Management College of Media Studies (DGMC) on 30th January 2020 was attended by around 130 students. The Films screened on day 2 were mainly consisted of documentaries and animated movies. Some of the films screened were ‘Pather Chujaeri’, ‘Dariya Hase Dongravar’, ‘Famous in Ahmedabad’, ‘Manas and People’, and ‘The Pea Plant Legacy’, ‘Ek Anek aur Ektka’, ‘Prince’, ‘Kiyamat’, ‘Benigni’, ‘The Basket’, ‘Radio Dolores’ respectively. Also a few short fiction films were screened such as ‘Naina’, ‘Solo Finale’ and ‘My Turn’. With such films being screened the viewers experienced different kinds of emotions because some films had comic elements while some others were intense in nature and with underlying messages in them. Today’s screening was also attended by the faculty members of DGMC.
Day 3
Day 3 of Film Screening at DGMC, the outreach screening partner of the Mumbai International Film Festival saw around 100 students who experienced immense pleasure watching another set of Documentaries, Short Films and Animation films from various genres made by artists across the world. Documentaries that were screened informed, educated and inspired the students absolutely. ‘Satyarthi’ threw light on the efforts taken by noble prize winner Kailash Satyarthi against the social evil of Child Labour, inspiring individuals who seek to bring out change in the society. ‘Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa’ and ‘Martyrdom of Mahatma’ reminded us of the great leader and his fight against apartheid in South Africa and Freedom Struggle on India. Moreover, ‘Eco Dharma’ was an informative film that portrayed the lives of Bishnois. The Short films (fiction) were ‘The Impasse’, ‘Siege’, ‘Gadhul’ and ‘Guilt’. Animation films were little potions of entertainment, various films screened were ‘The Gullible Kiss’, ‘Aigin’, ‘Bottled Cannibals’, ‘You Said It’ and ‘Fisherwoman and Tuk Tuk’.
Day 4
Day 4 at DGMC, the outreach screening partner of 16th Mumbai International Film Festival saw another batch of 60 students who aspire to become filmmakers. They took inspiration from another set of films specially curated by the Films Division of India that guided them on the path of filmmaking. ‘In Between’, ‘At the stairs’, ‘Mani Bhavan’, ‘River Story’, ‘Silence’ and ‘Then Came Gandhi’ were a set of films that documented life stories from the past and contemporary times. Various short fictions films screened were ‘Karai’, ‘Vaddis’ and ‘Music In the blood’. Animation films like ‘At the ends of the Earth’, ‘The last elephant’ and ‘Switchcraft’ assured fun and entertainment for the viewers and were a source of inspiration for aspiring animators.
